Wireless Printers

Are wireless MFC'c truely wireless? I have just setup home office & space is tight & printer will be >5.0m from desktop. I can get phone & power but connection to desktop system is a problem. So are they wireless from from this perspective or do they need to be connected to 1 main system first? Also what are the brands to avoid. I was hoping to get one with A3 capabilities as I do print plans.
