Net book connection to internet
I want to buy a netbook for email and internet surfing. I assume all netbooks have a built in modem for internet connection, but how do I connect to the same ISP I now use for my desk top? Net books don't have a disc drive so I can't use the disc I got from my ISP that I used to connect my desk top.

In Australia, not all netbooks have a 3G WWAN built in for internet access. Some do, but usually they're bundled by telcos with a monthly plan and at least a 12 month contract.
To connect to the same account as your desktop, you'd have to have a router, whether wired or wireless, and connect your netbook to that. Mind you this will restrict you to within the home -- if you want mobile broadband, you'll have to either get a bundled laptop as mentioned above, or a separate mobile broadband account with a company like Virgin, Optus or Telstra.

Hi Craig,
Thanks for your explanation, but I'm still confused and that could be because I didn't make myself clear enough. What I had in mind is carry a note book with me when travelling, then plugging it into the internet connection in a hotel say or go to an internet hotspot and access the internet. I 've seen many people doing this and am sure they are not in any contract with any Telcos. Does this sound more sensible?

In which case, you should be set to go. All the netbooks have a Wi-Fi adapter (not modem) built in and an Ethernet port out of the box.
