recommendations for GPS device

Hi, I'm interested in experts' recommendations as to which GPS I should buy. This is what I think I need:
In short term, must be convenient to use as a handheld device (waterproof, good battery life, mains power recharger, slim form factor) and have good english language European maps (Spain Portugal Austria Denmark etc) which include places of interest and handy info like hospitals & ATMs
in longer term (ie once the holiday is over), it must serve well as an in-car navigation device, and thus have all the usual capabilities including a reliable and convenient to use mounting device.
